’COUNCILORS LEAVE BENALLA IN A HOLE’ HOPEFULLY TWO COUNCILORS ARE OUT AND MORE TO GO! :- I predicted about a year ago, that Benalla Mayor Bill Hill will not run another term in council, this may turn out to be true… Also would like to see Patricia Claridge out, she has recently resigned as a Benalla Council which is good. I feel Cr. Donald Firth and Cr. Peter Davis are a brain-less pair and no good for Benalla and its future. BENALLA COUNCIL HAVE MADE BENALLA INTO A PINK ELEPHANT June 12, 2011 Visiting Euroa, was a fest for the eye’s and mind. Visiting Euroa because for its youth photograph exhibition. I have to say, it was truly a mind blowing experience of youth community art. Management and their selections of work for public viewing were well thought of, (except… later in this letter). The 19th century Flour Mill building was a wonderful setting with its rustic charm for this photographic exhibition, the photographs were pleasing to the eyes from the start to the end, many made me smile with gratitude for that youths’ work. But the sporting photos I did not appreciate, one is forced to see Australian Rules every day in the media and was not interesting for me, it disrupted the rhythm of creative work that I was taking in, the same would have been for football too, but “everybody’s a critic”. Leaving the exhibition I headed towards the railway/bus station and, saw some of your towns beautiful 19 century buildings still stand and, the more than 150 year old pub, with its veranda, where the sun shone in on an angle, shining-in on putters sitting at a table under this veranda. Visiting your magnificent museum of years gone-by, its historic machinery and workmanship of innovation by early Australians in the out-side section of the museum. Inside, the rooms set out in 19 century living, toys, clothing, kitchen, bedroom even with bedpans under to bed! A lot more to see, easy the best I have seen in our part of Victoria. On the modern side, Euroa’s new and very spacious library, with a meeting room and the children’s story reading room, the library’s own outdoor area good thoughtful planning that was. Euroa has more to offer tourist then Benalla, Benalla tourist Committee had a miss-leading sign stating ‘Benalla home town of Ned Kelly’ adjacent the Benalla council building, I asked the Mayor Bill Hill. Where was Ned Kelly’s home in ‘Benalla’? Even the Mayor Bill Hill didn’t know! This sign was finally removed. I was told by personnel, for the Benalla Rural City Council regarding the miss-leading sign. “It was just to get the tourist in”. We in Benalla and district still haven’t got a suitable library, for over thirty years Benalla people have been waiting for a needed new and modern library. Only because of our councillors’ and their mind-less priorities but if you want to see pink elephants, come to Benalla!
Roman Kaminski LETTER TO THE EDITOR - BENALLA ENSIGN 15JUNE2011 CHOICE NOT FAIR There are suggestions that we need to choose between the outdoor pools and the library as municipalities fight over limited grants. My taxes have gone up, my rates have gone up, indirect taxes have mushroomed and continue to go up and the infrastructure that once supported my business has disappeared, to be replaced by unapproachable conglomerates and invasive call centres. Despite this, Australians find themselves fighting three layers of government to protect what they have: swimming pools, libraries and the retention of public parks. Fights to preserve national parks as family destinations, fights to retain pristine wilderness areas from inappropriate use. There are fights for adequate funding of public education, public hospitals, public transport, and fights to prevent ongoing privatisation and sell-offs of public assets. And dont start me on the multitude of inane regulations that even satirists couldnt dream up. How often do our governments waste our money on expensive fluff? On failed or morally questionable policies? On allocating resources not as needed, but as pork barrelling, or to appease a powerful few? Donald Horne called Australia the lucky country. Fifty years on, his irony is even more apt. Stations once had permanent staff and public toilets, now they have armed guards. Once we invested in education, research and training, now we have subsidised big events where the only job creation is in a casualised service industry. And theres our ongoing reliance on uncontrolled mining, with dire consequences for both environment and other players in the Australian economy. Two hundred years of economic migration and were in danger of becoming once again underpaid servants rather than skilled, educated citizens. Library or pool? Education or health? Public transport or safe, rural roads? We should not have to choose and we shouldnt have to fight this hard. We should just vote smarter. Delfina Manor, Benalla Australian Rules 5th most popular sport with Australian population percipients:- Australian Statistics Bureau. In Benalla on Monday at the showgrounds, not more than about thirty-five children took part in some Australian Rules fun with national Australian Rules Club Carlton and their thirty or more players. A fair, but not a real large crowd as far as a national side team goes like Carlton Club to be in regional country a town like ‘Australian Rules’ town Benalla, more mums and dads with a few Carlton fans other AFL fans and just the on-lookers. As usually the media made the most of it to beat-up the event, the media AFL’s ‘lapdog’, much more so in country towns like Benalla, the Benalla Ensign which had not one but a number of articles within a month about Carlton coming to Benalla. But when it comes to other sports, as basketball, football, hockey, netball and cricket that have a coming events these Benalla sporting organisations get no such fanfare news from Benalla Ensign. Its only for AFL Australian Rules and for Benalla Saints Australian Rules Club, other sports are kept out. One would of expected much more at this Carlton Australian Rules event, but with only ‘well’ not more than 35 kids taking part in this Australian Rules event in Aussie Rules country Benalla! Its was great to see the kids running around with grins on their faces hand-balling, catching the ball and bouncing off tackling pads, but no such fun events are photo’s and reported by Benalla Ensign when events are held by other Benalla sporting organisations, they are ignored by Benalla Ensign, which is suppose to be a ‘community’ newspaper. Will Benalla MP Bill Sykes take the opportunity in Benalla Ensign yet again, this time with a photo with the Carlton boys in the Benalla Ensign, this is how the Benalla Ensign is so predictable. The Carlton Australian Rules Club were just their marketing themselves with any true trainning programe for the children mainly just got to run around withe the AusBall. --------------------------------- Ljubo Slams AFL Bigots http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/196359,ljubo-slams-afl-bigots.aspx -------------------------------- AFL players have left Benalla, mums and dads its safe to allow your young daughters out now. ------------------------------- Costello hits back at AFL -16Feb11 - ABC NEWS ONLINE ------------------------ POLICE BULLSHIT OVER FOOTBALL VIOLENCE You didnt see ploice zooming around cricket chanting supporters or AFL cheer squads at the goal post areas, but you see police just about stepping of football supporters toes and getting right into their faces, police are intimidating football supporters which will entice violence against police, the police should let them breathe and get off their backs. By Roman Kaminski FOOTBALL SPORTS REPORT IN REGIONAL COUNTRY VICTORIA, HA HA LOL - A friend brought this to mine attention, also says the Shepparton Newspaper (SheppNews) in country Victoria has heaps AFL news even if one of the AFL players farts, but nothing on A-League football, many agree too, and says the ABC regional (Shepparton, Albury/Wodonga) radio has a sports report its only on local Australian Rules and AFL and they the ABC our regional radio call it the 'sports' report!! - They are hillbillies in 'sport' reporting in country Victoria. There is a very, very active fooball association, the large Albury/Wodonga Football Association another is Shepparton and surrounding towns the Goulburn Murray Football Association again a large football community. Football is very popular even, they have women teams, heap of kids. The media here are hillbillies bad to favor 'sport' Aussie Rules is overwhelming reported on than other sports in country Victoria. Something different for the young in INDOOR FOOTBALL BENALLA http://photosbyroman.multiply.com/photos/album/78/INDOOR_FOOTBALL_BENALLA_1011#photo=1 BLOOD DONORS IN BENALLA HAVE HIGH PRESSURE Red Cross Blood Bank donor numbers are low. In Benalla I have been reluctant to go and donate blood; that is since the Red Cross Blood Bank introduced its mobile (caravan type) vans, the steps leading into these mobile blood bank van are very steep and dangerous, waiting in side these mobile blood bank vans can get very crowded even with just a few donators waiting it’s crowed being seated and I have seen many donators standing because there is no room to sit and making it even more packed in the van. Going to and from the donors bunk can be very uncomfortable with crowded donors and staff in this isolated area. Later when having a cup of tea and a biscuit it can be easily a wetting experience holding your Styrofoam cup with on place to rest your cup. Previously it was much better, donor’s would gather at the Benalla Citizen Club without having to make an appointment, processing was comfortable even a good sized area to have your (in a real cup) cup of tea and cake or sandwich’s seated at a table and conversation was easy and comfortable with other donor’s. Polluting signs of a revolting Benalla politician Elections signs of pollution by Benalla MP Bill Sykes. I don’t know how active the election campaigner’s are going in other districts, but in the Benalla district National member Bill Sykes is flat out putting up posters (again) of himself to be elected. Not much has been heard of the other three candidates apart from an electoral article from two others candidates in our local papers it’s been all Mr. Sykes is in the Benalla paper each week, even being pictured at public events by the local paper, Mr. Sykes is getting a lot of coverage from our local paper. And with that Mr. Sykes has campaign posters of himself all over Benalla; there was even a huge poster of Mr. Sykes on a HiAce flat tray vehicle at the main entrance to the Benalla Show and at the other entrance another huge poster in a box trailer which was blocking the footpath. Travelling from Shepparton towards Benalla, (I saw) in the Benalla boundary just before the Tocumal/Cobram turn off, four huge gum trees have campaign posters of Mr. Sykes and more are seen going the other way from Benalla to Shepparton, and still more posters getting closer to Benalla. There must be posters at every road in and out of Benalla even out from Benalla towards Lurg and other District involving Mr. Sykes. There still are remains and signs that have not been taken down from Mr. Sykes campaigns from years ago on rural road sides, signs on public land; they should have been removed properly from the last Victorian election and from other campaigns. But to top it off, it was when, I saw a large campaign poster of Mr. Sykes attached on the back frame of a pensioner’s motorized scooter at the RSL Remembrance Day Service in Benalla. For the last few years Mr. Sykes has been exploiting ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day for his own political gain. Later I speaking to this pensioner Mr. Levey, I told Mr. Levey that Mr. Sykes has no respect for our brave men and women and that Mr. Sykes is a fool to campaign using his political campaign poster for political gain at such an important memorial service, which is recognized by the world. Mr. Levey said, ya I think Sykes is a fool too (the two others veterans agreed). “As long as Sykes pays me”, said Mr. Levey. Mr. Sykes has big plans for Benalla announcing - Skate park pledge (November 10 2010 Benalla Ensign). Member for Benalla, Bill Sykes has guaranteed $200 000 towards the upgrading of the Benalla Skate Park if the Liberal-National (if the) Coalition is elected to government on November 27.... What has Mr. Sykes done for Benalla to improve Benalla in his terms as MP for Benalla, he would tell you lies? For Mr. Sykes Weary Dunlop award (Weary was a Rugby League player and played for Australian, Weary did not play Australian Rules) Benalla and district children only get allowed to go to an Australian Rules game in sports or to have a cup of tea in Melbourne’s parliament house, yes a very narrow minded person is Sykes, Benalla children and Benalla people deserve better. Some years back now in the Herald Sun an article brought forward concerns that Mr. Sykes and his office were sending out letters to the editors of small country town newspapers in the electoral area seat of Benalla. Letter’s praising National Party Mr. Sykes for his good work, written by Mr. Sykes himself and or by his office! Will Mr. Sykes get the National party moron that lives in my area, to damage mine property again because of such letters of concern for Benalla. Long serving (long suffering Benalla), it would be good to see when Bill Hill leave, I would be surprised for him to continue, Benalla needs more clear thinking councilors and a state government representative for Benalla, Benalla deserves better then Bill Hill and Bill Sykes. Sykes and Benalla Mayor Bill Hill I feel are more of a burden, keeping Benalla in a black hole, Benalla one of the most disadvantaged towns in Victorian, for to many years and still is, Hill and Sykes voted for more poker machines wasted rated payers money to re-finance with ratepayers money the Benalla Saints Australian Rules club’s dressing rooms and its second level community centre…! But the community centre is a entertainment centre as the second level of the Benalla Saints Australian Rules Club’s lakeside complex and was suppose to be a health community centre such as (consulting rooms for child and women abuse and for alcohol problems as such) as stated by the Benalla Saints Australian Rules associates campaign committee for funding (again) CEO Anthony Putt (and CEO of Central Access Limited Benalla) But Benalla people were lied to again! Gullible councilors' and Mayor Bill Hill with our gullible National member MP for Benalla Bill Sykes, Benalla need good thinking representatives no fools like Bill Hill and Bill Sykes. SILLY COUNCIL ALLOW SYKES TO ADVERTISE ‘POLITICALLY SPEAKING' Buying property in Benalla ‘politically speaking’, like the Real-estate sign say’s ‘STUNNING LIFESTYLE PROPERTY’ only for Liberal/National voters, ALP voters not welcome by the sounds of it. Benalla is a strong National party seat held by MP for Benalla Bill Sykes. Is this the opposition’s way for democracy in Benalla for ALP voters to keep out? So if you are voting in the coming state elections and vote for local member Bill Sykes you’re welcome in Benalla..! And council fools like Mr. Joyce for Benalla councils Appliance officer (allowing sign to stay way beyond auction a high manager with council drives past each day), likes to enforce his power on the unfortunate, taking pensioner to court for one week overdue dog licence the pensioner got off a $600 fine that council tried to get the Magistrate dismissed the case in favor of pensioner. I don’t mind for foreigners working in our country but many do; in Benalla we have New Zealander Matt Jenkins a long time manager of Benalla Ensign (still being a very bad newspaper considered by many locals) his wife working in the Benalla library as well. I found Don Farmer who worked a short time for the Benalla Ensign also a foreigner from New Zealand did marvelous work for the Benalla Ensign. And now we have Angela Townsend who is another New Zealander again working for the Benalla Ensign, Angela has been with the Benalla Ensign for a year or so, being one of the longest editor for the Ensign for a long while! Angela must work only part-time for the Benalla Ensign because the quality and presentation has not improved, sure there has been a couple of spat’s of the Benalla Ensign once or twice a year being reasonable, but not as good as the Mansfield Courier or the Euroa Gazette on continued publications. The cricket section of the Benalla Ensign (although last week was rained-out), there hasn’t been any photo’s to compliment, to a almost filled cricket write-up by Trevor Saker. Has this to do with the editor Ms Townsend and others in the Ensign not working on Saturday or a Sunday for an hour to snap a photo for the cricket page, small towns like Mansfield and Euroa papers always have an abundance of quality sporting photos. Almost 100 percent of Benalla Ensign photo’s are contributed by members of the community, the Benalla Ensign do not credit these people for their work with making photo’s available for the Benalla Ensign, I feel the Benalla Ensign thinks its trying to fool Benalla people into believing that all photo’s are by Benalla Ensign! Again this year, was a very poor representation in photo’s of the Benalla show, to the back page’s of the Benalla Ensign (20 Oct 2010) were about seven boring photo’s, like it was suppose to be show-day fun and rides for the kids, boring photo’s which were taken by the Benalla Ensign…? The Benalla Ensign prides itself on its logo wording ‘caring for the community’ (lol) on the front page, was National member for Benalla Bill Sykes and another photo of Liberal federal member for INDI Sophie Mirabella, on the back page again was National member for Benalla Bill Sykes, Sykes in other article in the Ensign in the edition. National member for Benalla Bill Sykes must be the most photographed person for the Benalla Ensign, New Zealander Benalla Ensign editor Angela Townsend must be the most gullible or is looking for advancement of some kind, by being a suck-hole, which is it…?

FIRTH ---------------------- The ‘ i ‘ IN BENALLA RURAL CITY COUNCIL IS FOR THE IDIOTS IN COUNCIL – Benalla people deserve to be angry of Benalla council, for keeping Benalla in a hole! Benalla tourist numbers are down spending on the Benalla Saints Football Club change rooms, the second level is to be a community centre (for the Benalla Saints Football Club!) and a very huge amount of ratepayer’s money with state government and federal government grants for the Benalla Art Gallery. Even the Benalla council put up false signage stating Benalla is the homestead of Ned Kelly, tourist are not that stupid but Benalla councilors are! Benalla Rural City Council’s bad management has forced other community facilities to despair; Benalla for many years has been one of Victoria’s most disadvantage town and council like Mayor Bill Hill, Cr Claridge, Cr Firth and Davis only enjoy their own interests with group a like the Benalla Saints Football Club the Benalla Art Gallery to be popular within such groups, where a very large amount of money has been spent and not responsible throughout the community. These Councilors’ lack the intelligent for a safe and balanced community. Still Benalla has not had a suitable spacious modern Library and other community needed facilities needs. Other towns like Mansfield (just for one) provide adequate funds for information service centre to operate. Benalla people deserve better and better representation from fools as the Mayor Bill Hill, Cr. Claridge, Davis, Firth and MP for Benalla like Bill Sykes. All the Mayor Bill Hill on WIN-TV had to say was, we (the council) had other priorities (like the Benalla Saint Football Club’s priorities and Benalla Art Gallery again is always a tourist only priority) and in the Benalla Ensign Mayor Hill said, we are working with volunteers! That’s all Mayor Bill Hill words are good for fooling Benalla people and cheating them, from important community amenities and needed services with other of the pathetic councilors. "Benalla Rural City Chief executive officer Tony McIlray said council currently provided $15,000 annually to the visitor information centre" I am sure Mr. McIlroy knows well the truly, that the Benalla information centre requires at least $50,000 annually not $15,000. Mr. McIlroy is another dense member of Benalla Rural City council. Who is advising McIIroy the Benalla Saints Football Club or the Benalla Art Gallery or both with the help Mayor Bill Hill's son, from Aldous and Hill accountants! Will the family need more or will the family be satisfied with this $10 limit cost, that Coles states, for a family meal. Maybe, the same could be done with Aldi products (or very similar); comparing costs with Cole’s $10 meal and an Aldi $10 family meal, which could gives you more for you buck! Cole’s and advertising tricking you again – Those KFC pieces and those Mac’s look bigger on TV ads. In this Coles ad the bowls look a fair size…but really how small are they? You and your family would be still hungry; I could say I could feed a family for under $5. But they would still hungry? I would like to see one of those meals live (how small they are ad look big), and with the everyday prices! I feel that BPACC is an integrate part of the Benalla community from the wealthy to the lesser wealthy for people in need of help. BPACC is for the primary schools and college schools to show off their plays to us, for orchestra’s and many other types of performer’s, it has the Benalla theater company, visiting theater groups from our capital cities, a cinema for young and old its a education centre with many aspects as for community meetings too, are just a few importance to the Benalla community BPACC is. It’s for the Benalla and district people it’s for all in many ways. But apart from hearing financial reports about our wonderful and comfortable BPACC no such reports are made public as to the financial funding given by council (ratepayers money) and of government grants. Where as for Benalla is one of the most disadvantaged post codes where government funding should be made available for Benalla people and not mainly to attract tourists. Council boast about Art Gallery tourist numbers but council give no financial figures are made public as to Benalla business increase or such because of the Benalla Art Gallery. Most or very many of Benalla people do their shopping in Shepparton or Wangaratta, I often see Benalla people in these outer towns shopping. More of our rates and government funding should not mainly be for the Benalla Art Gallery or to the controversial new community centre to be the second level of the Benalla Saints Football Club changing rooms! (Again the Benalla Saints Football Club and councilors for this new club building has been a damning report and as to miss-management of money reported in the Auditor Generals Office report). I was born in Benalla and as long as I can remember, Benalla has never had a suitable and spacious Library for its people and for its children, shame on council that they can not get communities priorities right (that’s why Benalla is in a hole) council as a individual group are a financial burden on the community with bad priorities and bad management of our rates and government grants. BPACC committee members Benalla Rural City Council CEO Mr. McIlroy and Cr. Davis are useless for BPACC and useless at managing our rates. Such councilors’ are ruining BPACC and Benalla into a hole. BPACC will be better without Council CEO Mr. McIIray and Cr. Peter Davis as I recall Cr. Davis say what a waste of money BPACC is years ago. I feel BPACC is magnificent and of great importance for all of Benalla. But Cr. Davis has not made such comments regarding council/ratepayers waste of money on the Benalla Saints Football Club and its lakeside changing rooms and their community centre as the second level of the building or the very huge expense of rate payer’s money for the Benalla Art Gallery, such councilor are good for nothing. ---------------------- LETTER TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND I JUST LOVE READING ARTICLES LIKE THIS (INSERT) I just love reading articles as this (Excitement building Chloe Warburton SheppNews 7Aug10), our young students able to do their university education here in regional country Victoria instead having to live and do their uni course in Melbourne.

POLICE FACE CRIMINAL CHARGES OVER DEATH - ANDREA PETRIE THE AGE August 2, 2010 SEVERAL Victorian police are likely to face criminal charges over the treatment and subsequent death of a man after he was released from Dandenong police station this year. The 53-year-old Chinese man died at Dandenong Hospital about 11.40am on May 13, some 15 hours after being discharged from the police station. The Age understands homicide squad investigators have seized video footage from outside the station that shows about five police dumping the visibly ill man in a puddle upon his release while the temperature was about 12 degrees and raining. It shows the officers standing over the man laughing and gloating about the state he was in and some policewomen can also be seen holding their noses because of the stench caused by the man soiling himself while in custody. One of the officers is believed to have brought a police divvy van from the back of the station so she could sit inside with the heater on and continue watching the man lying on the ground. He died of what is believed to have been hypothermia. His death was made public two weeks later by an interpreter who had been called to the station after the man was locked up for drunkenness about 3.20pm. She said when she arrived about 7.45pm and looked into his cell, he had soiled himself and she saw "blood everywhere". She said he had begged police to take him to hospital or get medical help, but they repeatedly ignored him. The interpreter, known only as Jay Jay, said police told her ''he was dying anyway''. Police have confirmed they have CCTV footage from inside the station that shows the man crawling from his cell bleeding and in agony. When paramedics arrived about 9pm, they found the man conscious, bleeding and breathing rapidly. Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said at the time there was no evidence the man had suffered any physical trauma due to mishandling or use of force by police. He added that it appeared the man had died because of ''a long-standing and pre-existing medical condition'', believed to be cirrhosis. Mr Cornelius said the officer ''ultimately accountable'' for custody at Dandenong station had been switched to other duties, and further disciplinary action would be decided by the head of the Ethical Standards Department, who is overseeing the investigation, pending the outcome of the investigation. The Age has been told that criminal charges are being considered for those involved, with manslaughter yet to be ruled out. Some police could also be sacked for their involvement. ---------------------- POLICE TO BOOST RANKS FOR EASTERNATS ABC NEWS online 5Aug2010 Extra police will be in the Benalla area when the Easternats drag racing event is held at Winton next year. The car event is moving from Melbourne to Winton and about 25,000 people are expected to attend. Acting Senior Sergeant Lance Werner from Benalla police says they have been working with Winton Raceway staff. He says there will be more police in the area over the Easter long weekend to deal with the crowds. Benalla Art Gallery has cost ratepayer well over hundreds of thousands each year for over thirty years or more, just recently it’s been less, ratepayers contribute $75,000 a year with additions, last year over $100,000 to the Benalla Art Gallery for maintenance and improvements through government grants without added costs for a council gardener for the Benalla Art Gallery area. I am most in favor of Art and Art Gallery’s for people to enjoy and to be amazed, but not in favor of excessive waste of ratepayer’s money and government grants to please certain people and councilors’. Yes you hear of council reports, large numbers of tourist visiting the Benalla Art Gallery. But, the tourists leave in their buses spending nothing or very little, what else, is there in Benalla… the Benalla Saints Football Club and its new lakeside changing rooms and communities centre…? Other facilities in Benalla are neglected for repairs, that is, apart from the Benalla Art Gallery and its surrounding areas, the Benalla Art Gallery is a huge expense on Benalla ratepayer’s to run and maintain. The Benalla council and its tourist committee, to attract more tourist, they erected signage adjacent the councils office building stating that ‘Benalla Home Town of Ned Kelly’; this was a lie and misleading information. I asked the Mayor of Benalla Bill Hill, he didn’t know were Ned Kelly’s house was in Benalla either! Mr. Barber public relations officer for Benalla council couldn’t tell me where Ned Kelly’s house was as well! It’s just to get the tourists into Benalla, Mr. Barber told me – Benalla Council and its tourist committee finally erased the words from the signage which was ‘BENALLA HOMESTEAD OF NED KELLY’ coming to their sanity as to stopping to mislead Benalla people and the tourists. But, doesn’t the Benalla Art Gallery bring in a huge number of tourists and money…so we are told…! The Benalla Art Gallery is used mostly for gathering events has a café and had events like an expo, to show and taste regional food and wine, the Benalla Art Gallery in not purely an Art Gallery and is finding ways furthermore to finance its existence. The continued cost of Benalla Art Gallery is a very huge burden on Benalla, especially when Benalla is rated as one of the most disadvantage towns in Victoria for health, income and in need of more important institutes. So yes, Shepparton have a new Art Gallery if truly needed; but not a ‘pink elephant’ have your new Art Gallery environmentally friendly, solar powered, self-efficient and very little maintenance cost as possible. Emilio, if you’re so fond of the Benalla Art Gallery, you are welcome to live in Benalla and help pay to maintain the Benalla Art Gallery and be part of the most disadvantaged town in Victoria too. Picture: Francis Aaron RETIRING MPs TO COST TAXPAYERS $18M Ben Packham From: Herald Sun July 20, 2010 TAXPAYERS face an estimated $18 million pension bill to support almost two dozen MPs bowing out at this election. There are 20 MPs retiring and another three senators who are not recontesting their seats and whose terms expire in July next year. While average pensioners have to survive on about $640 a fortnight, long-serving politicians receive annual pensions worth about twice the average wage. They include former speaker and Victorian Liberal MP David Hawker, who recently enjoyed a taxpayer-financed trip to Mongolia and Bhutan. He will receive about $120,000 a year. Outgoing Finance Minister and Member for Melbourne Lindsay Tanner, 54, will get $111,000 a year, while ACT Labor MP Bob McMullan will get almost $130,000 a year. Victorian Liberal Fran Bailey walks away with an annual pension of about $116,000. Another Victorian Liberal, outgoing Member for Kooyong Petro Georgiou, will receive $91,000 a year. MPs can opt to take half their entitlement in a lump sum, receiving 10 years' worth in one hit. Those who do so continue to receive a half-pension until they die. Labor received a potentially explosive review of politicians' entitlements before the election was announced, but failed to release it. It is believed to include a proposed $50,000 jump in MPs' base salary, while perks such as study tours and electorate allowances would be scrapped. Mr Georgiou said he would leave it to Australians to decide if he deserved his pension. "I'm receiving whatever I'm receiving," Mr Georgiou said. "People will make their own judgments about whether it's enough or too much." Ms Bailey said she had worked hard for her 18 years in Parliament. "I have always worked as hard and to the best of my ability and my contract has been renewed every three years at five elections," Ms Bailey said. "I have probably one of the most difficult electorates in the country to represent in terms of getting around it." - With Matt Johnston FOOTNOTE by Roman Kaminski – THESE POLITCIANS RECEIVE MUCH MORE! ---------------------- THE AGE POLICE UNDER FIRE OVER GIRL IN CUSTODY BY JOEL GIBSON July 23, 2010 SIX months after police were called to a public pool because she was doing ''bombs'' near children, a 14-year-old indigenous girl has spent six hours in custody in Tamworth police station. The girl's detention was the result of an administrative error on Tuesday, police said, but legal experts called into question their handling of the case from the beginning. The saga began when the girl was arrested at Gosford Olympic Pool with two male friends in January ''to prevent an imminent breach of the peace'' after a manager called police about their behaviour. She was then sprayed with capsicum by police after refusing to get into a police wagon, suffered an asthma attack and required an ambulance. When she failed to attend court on charges of resisting arrest and using offensive language in Woy Woy earlier this month, she was convicted in her absence and a warrant was issued for her arrest, according to a source familiar with the case. The girl, who cannot be named, turned herself in accompanied by her guardian at 9.45am on Tuesday in Tamworth, where she now lives. ''At 4pm the Oxley Local Area Command Duty Officer realised that due to an administrative error the girl had not appeared in court,'' the police media unit admitted in a statement. ''She was then immediately released on unconditional bail to reappear at the Tamworth Children's Court on the 17th of August, 2010. An inquiry into the incident has commenced.'' Police said the girl spoke to legal aid at 10.30am but it is believed she called a hotline and has still not seen a lawyer. The president of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, Cameron Murphy, said the police actions seemed excessive, but charges of offensive language, resisting arrest and failure to obey a direction following minor infractions were all too common. ''They constantly complain about a lack of police resources,'' he said. ''What are they doing wasting all of these resources dealing with a kid involved in a relatively minor matter? '' The chairman of the criminal law committee of the NSW Bar Association, Stephen Odgers, SC, said police were not allowed to arrest a person to prevent a breach of the peace, only a person who had just committed an offence or was in the process of doing so, and then only if necessary to prevent a repetition. Mr Odgers said he was not expert in the workings of the children's court, but ''I would have thought that if she did not turn up, the proper procedure would be not to enter a conviction but to adjourn and, if necessary, issue a warrant for her arrest to ensure she turns up''. ---------------------- NEWS TIP - LETTER TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND HIGH-SPEED CHASE LEADS TO JAIL TIME July 23, 2010 - ABC Online A man from Benalla has been sentenced to two years jail for leading police on a high-speed chase in New South Wales. AUSTRALIAN RULES (AFL) IS FORCED DOWN OUR THROATS - OUR LOCAL ABC RADIO ONLY GIVES AUSTRALIAN RULES AND AFL, AS A ‘SPORTS’ REPORT! IN AUSTRALIA THE BIGGEST NEWS FOR THE DECADE WAS FOOTBALL JUST BEATING TIGER WOODS. AUSTRALIAN’S BET OVER 120 MILLION DOLLARS ON THE FOOTBALL WORLD CUP IN SOUTH AFRICIA AS COMPARED WITH SEVEN MILLION ON THE MELBOURNE CUP AND SIMILAR IN AFL BETTING. ‘BEST POLITICAL ‘SPORTING’ ARTICLE I HAVE READ…. BY DAVED DAVUTOVIC’ ---------------------- NEWS TIP/LETTER TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND AUSTRALIAN RULES OR YOUR NOT AUSTRALIAN TIME FOR AUSTRALIA TO GET BEHIND THE 2022 WORLD CUP BID David Davutovic: News Limited newspapers July 12, 2010 WITH the eyes of the world fixed on South Africa for the past month, it has only reiterated the power of football and particularly the World Cup. It also confirms the absurdity of the AFL-led anti-World Cup propaganda in Australia. To consider the hosting of a World Cup a waste of money is like saying Australians don't care about football. Shock horror - FFA are spending a whopping $11.37m of taxpayer-funded money on the bid. What cynics consistently and conveniently fail to mention is that the Cup would generate colossal wealth for the nation. An IBISWorld study released today estimated the 2022 World Cup would generate $35.5 billion in spending across the Australian economy - dwarfing the $9 billion generated by the 2000 Olympics. "Football's World Cup and summer editions of Olympic Games vie for the title of the biggest sports event on the planet. However, when it comes to spending, there is a clear winner," said IBISWorld general manager (Australia) Robert Bryant. "IBISWorld forecasts that the 2022 World Cup in Australia would, in real terms, generate four times more spending than the 2000 Olympics." Over one million people have entered South Africa's borders since early June and that number would be much higher in Australia because of the pre-2010 tournament security fears. Just as the 2006 World Cup changed the perception of Germany, the 2010 World Cup has left the globe viewing South Africa and the entire African continent in a much more positive light. With Australia's 22 million a fraction of the world's 6.7 billion population, the World Cup provides Australia with a wonderful opportunity to become part of the world and not apart from it. If people thought the Olympics were huge, the World Cup will hit them for six, attracting 750,000 spectators from abroad as opposed to Sydney 2000's 130,000. Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Geelong and Townsville would all get a slice of the pie this time - not just Sydney. While the majority of Australians support the World Cup bid, some of the minority that didn't would probably change their view if the information they were receiving on the World Cup and football generally was objective. Australians have had ignorant, ill-informed rubbish about football shoved down their throats for decades. But the number of Australians who have experienced the power and unity of the world game is rapidly growing. The World Cup has copped its standard lines from the usual critical suspects - "boring, un-Australian, a silly game, diving cheats" etc. We've heard it all before. Most concerning is the AFL's bully-boy tactics in trying to undermine the bid. Australia can learn huge lessons from South Africa, where the whites (traditional rugby union followers) embraced the World Cup because it was of great benefit to the country. Not only did many thoroughly enjoy it but they had a month-long party they'll never forget while making lifelong friends with visitors from many of the competing 32 nations. If the AFL doesn't want to embrace the bid, then they should at least stop undermining it. Attempting to leak damaging stories at times when football is bound for the back pages (such as the World Cup draw) and pressuring radio stations into downscaling their football broadcasting is despicable behaviour. Aussie Rules will never die and football will continue to grow regardless of the AFL's attempts to stymie it. Union realised this a long time ago, as has the NRL in more recent times. FIFA delegates are arriving in Australia at the end of July for the official World Cup inspection and no doubt there will be another round of propaganda bullets fired from the usual suspects. But Australia is a genuine chance of hosting the 2022 World Cup and it's time for the entire nation to embrace the bid. $123m wagered on World Cup 2010 Tabcorp Holdings Ltd says $123 million was wagered on the soccer World Cup with TAB Sportsbet. Tabcorp said a total of 3.1 million individual bets were placed on the 64 games via TAB Sportsbet's national network of telephone betting and its NSW and Victorian TAB retail outlets. Online wagering accounted for almost one quarter of the total turnover. "Australian punters have a love affair with the Soccer World Cup and the world's biggest sporting tournament has once again eclipsed TAB Sportsbet records," TAB Sportsbet Managing Director Craig Nugent said. "Australian punters have voted with their feet to again make TAB Sportsbet their first choice when it comes betting on sporting blockbusters." The biggest hold for an individual game was $9.5 million on the Spain versus Germany semi final. Monday morning's Spain v Netherlands final held $8.4 million. The biggest individual bet was $550,000 placed at $1.52 for Spain or a draw in the semi final against Germany. The successful punter took away $836,000, including his $550,000 stake. A recent Office of Police Integrity report revealed Shepparton had the equal second highest number of patients detained under the Mental Health Act among large Victorian towns and suburbs. Shepparton police detained 15 mental health patients under the act, which allows officers to apprehend a person who appears to be mentally ill, suicidal, is threatening self - harm or harm towards others, even if they are not suspected of being involved in crime. OPI raised concern for the health and safety of the patients and suggested hospital treatment would be more appropriate than sitting in a prison cell. Goulburn Valley Area Mental Health Service manager Bill Brown said the high number of detainees was not ideal. But he said circumstances often meant police were required to apprehend the patient before placing them in a restricted environment. Mr. Brown said the health service had a strong relationship with Shepparton police, a relationship which was ‘‘critical to the safety of the community’’. ‘‘In an ideal world, there would be none (detainees),’’ Mr. Brown said. ‘‘There are occasions that individuals are affected by the severity of their mental illness or by drugs and alcohol. ‘‘In these situations, where the person may be seen as a risk to others or themselves, then the safest option is to call the police to come pick them up. ‘‘If we are familiar with the person, the majority of the time the patient is taken straight to emergency. ‘‘However, if we aren’t and neither are police, then they are placed in the cells before being examined and assessed.’’ He said the services met regularly and liaised with each other to ensure protocols and relationships were in place. Shepparton police Inspector Ian Bull was unavailable to make comment about the report. The OPI report also showed 975 people were detained in the Shepparton police cells last year, with about 45 per cent arrested for being drunk in public. It said 2.67 detainees occupied the Shepparton police cells on average per day. This week Tony Abbott announced the Opposition's new mental health policy: $1.5bn of investment in youth mental health services over 4 years.
Congratulations! This is a huge breakthrough in our campaign for mental health reform. In just the last week, an incredible 98,901 Australians have joined our petition for mental health reform - and together we've flooded MPs with over 21,000 personal faxes with stories about why mental health reform is so important to us. It's working.
The Opposition deserve congratulations for this week's announcement. Now the heat is on the Government to step up and match it. We need to know that Australians struggling with ill mental health, and the families who support them, will be looked after regardless of who moves into the Lodge this election.
So, while the heat is on, can you make a quick phone call to your local Labor Senator's office? You don't need to be an expert - a quick phone call explaining why you're passionate about mental health reform will go a long way.
In Victoria, we're aiming for 40 calls to the office of your Senator, Jacinta Collins. Can you pick up the phone now? It can take less than 60 seconds.

While the Government has spent most of the year promoting its $7.3bn health reform plan - the key element that's been missing is a bold and ambitious plan to revolutionise mental health care.
In just the past week, we've seen the power of the Labor caucus to change leaders literally overnight. Imagine if they were as committed to boosting mental health funding as they are to boosting their poll numbers. We need to make them understand that one can't happen without the other. Pick up the phone and make it clear that this election we're looking for real leadership - and that means an immediate $600 million investment in mental health care next year.
Can you call the office of your Senator, Jacinta Collins? The number is (03) 9890 7022.

The way forward is clear. Just this week, a conference of Australia's leading mental health experts and organisations released their blueprint for tackling our mental health crisis. It will require an immediate investment of approx. $600 million next year, followed by continued investment and national reform. Click here to read more about the detailed mental health plan.
But you don't need to be a policy expert to make a difference - your passion or personal story could help make the difference. Can you dial (03) 9890 7022 and make a quick phone call to Jacinta Collins's office?

Thanks to our councilors’. Benalla councilors’ Donald Firth, Patricia Claridge, Peter Davis Mayor Bill Hill with others and Benalla Central Access Limited CEO Anthony Putt should take note to what is a truly community Centre, compared to the Benalla Community Centre that will be built as the second level on top of the Benalla Saint Football Club changing rooms. This new Benalla Community Centre as second level of the Saints Football Club changing rooms with space for events, as wedding receptions, sporting presentation nights with other sporting events including bar catering facilities, and they will call this a community centre! It will be more like a Benalla Saints Football Club Entertainment Centre, but not a community centre as such, for community crises as first was described. The people concerned in having this Benalla Community Centre to be on top of the Benalla Saints Changing rooms! Was it specifically called to be the Benalla Community Centre to fool our politicians and local government for more grants, this building from the start was controversial, even a damning report by the Auditor Generals Office to how original grants were mismanaged, after fifteen years of controversy the Clubs Rooms will be finally finished, only to be completed by the Benalla Saints Football Club, as to build the second level by calling it the ‘Benalla Community Centre’! Mr. Putt CEO of Central Access Limited Benalla also on the steering committee for the Benalla Community Centre to be built on top of the Benalla Saints Changing rooms had told me that there will be consulting facilities for abused women and for family abusive situations for consultancy even for youth help, as well a meeting space for community groups within the building. LETTER – TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND Benalla CEO Tony Mcllroy slept out for the homeless helping raise money, that’s good at least they raised money. I wonder if Mr. Mcllroy was more fortunate in sleeping out then a real homeless would, was Mcllroy wearing his thermo underwear and had a big meal before leaving for the sleep out, did the organizers put on a BQQ during the night with coffee or tea to drink at any time. Did the organizers put on a breakfast for them too, not like a real homeless person would get after a cold nights sleep! Or did Mr. Mcllroy arrive for the sleep out at 11pm at Edihad Stadium when given his cardboard mat to sleep on (no mention of sleeping bag or blankets..!) and a beanie to help keep warm on the concrete base. Mr. Mcllroy said (to Benalla Ensign) "I had my beanie pulled down over my eyes and ears ... as long as you were out of the draught, it wasn't too bad." Ya, I suppose it would not have been that bad too, with a gut full of food and spend just for a few hours or less on a cardboard mat (what without sleeping bag or blankets..?) and breakfast cooked for you with a hot coffee. Mr. Mcllroy went on to say "It is something that is not talked about (the homeless) - and some of these experiences are horrific." Maybe Mr. Mcllroy should of gave us some example’s… of why we have homeless people in Australia including young homeless boys and girls abused by parents, sexual abuse, bashings because of alcoholism, gambling addiction or is it something we should not talk about Mr. Mcllroy, how many homeless people are there in Benalla and why are they homeless if any Mr. Mcllroy, not part of your business portfolio as CEO of Benalla, concerned today and forgotten tomorrow? Regards Roman Kaminski -------------------------------- MANSFIELD COURIES 2 JUNE 2010 NEWS TIP/LETTER – TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND MAN CHARGED OVER COLLISION Accused almost four times over prescribed limit. A BENALLA man has been remanded in custody to face court in August on two charges of negligently causing serious injury. Christopher Allan, 35, has been charged in relation to a collision in Barjarg, near Mansfield, on Saturday morning. Allan made no application for bail when he appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Monday. Prosecutor, Sergeant Mario Eliades, made a brief summary of the charges, telling how it is alleged a middle aged couple were on their way to a garage sale when their vehicle was struck from behind by a baker's van. He said based on a conservative estimate the van was travelling in the vicinity of 120km/h when it struck the vehicle. The collision caused the vehicle to lose control and run off the road, with both occupants sustaining life threatening injuries and being conveyed to hospital. Sgt Eliades said police opposed bail because Allan was an unacceptable risk to the community. He said police had gained preliminary information that Allan had consumed 27 schooners of beer on the evening prior to the collision, while a partly consumed bottle of spirits was found in the truck. A preliminary breath test also recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.19, though it will take eight weeks for police to receive the official blood test. Allan opted to represent himself in the trial, after initially being represented by duty solicitor, Nancy Battiato. He indicated he would like to make an application for bail, but Magistrate Stella Stuthridge advised him that owing to the seriousness of the charges, he would need to prepare material in support of a bail application, after which Allan decided against the application. The case was adjourned for a committal mention in Wangaratta Magistrates Court on August 5. -------------------------------- VICTORIA POLICE CONCERNS OVER FAMILY VIOLENCE AND HOMICIDES NEWS TIP/LETTER – TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND ABC NEWS ONLINE - Sunday, 06 June 2010 A number of horrific family violence-related homicides in the past few months have prompted Victoria Police to urge the community to report incidents of family violence. The appeal goes out to victims and to family and friends who may be aware of these crimes. Detective Superintendent Wendy Steendam said in many family-violence related murder cases, police have been unaware of previous incidents of violence within the family. However, generally someone who knows the victim knows about the situation. "We really need people to seek help for their loved ones," Detective Superintendent Steendam said. "We urge victims or those close to them to speak out so that police can take action and together we can demonstrate that violence against women and children is unacceptable. "There are organisations, including Victoria Police, who will be able to help those affected by a violent relationship or family situation. "Though there have recently been a number of extreme incidents which have played out in the public domain, many acts of violence occur behind closed doors. In these circumstances police remain unaware of these matters and do not have the opportunity to provide assistance and support," she said. "We are also using this appeal to urge men who feel they may need help with their behaviour to seek support. "There are a number of organisations which can offer assistance," Detective Superintendent Steendam said. Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Bernie Edwards said a high percentage of homicides were committed by people known to each other. These cases do not always involve couples or children. "As we've seen in recent weeks, homicides have a devastating impact on families and friends of the victim and on communities. "We urge people to seek support if they are the victim of violence and to report the matter to police. "It must also be noted that in the past 25 years, the homicide rate in Victoria has dropped," Detective Inspector Edwards said. In the last five years, the average has been around 60 homicides a year. This compared with an average of more than 80 between 1985 and1990. Detective Inspector Edwards said the new Family Violence Act 2008 was one of the measures helping to reduce the number of homicides. He said powers allowing police to separate those involved in family violence incidents for up to 72 hours -before applying for an intervention order in the court - reduced the likelihood of continuing violence and provided instant protection for those affected by the violence. "One of the only ways we can help stop matters escalating to homicide is by the community reporting issues of family violence to police," Detective Inspector Edwards said. Long-time family violence campaigner Jane Ashton knows only too well about the fatal consequences of family violence. Her twin sister, Julie Ramage, was killed by her estranged husband seven years ago. Mrs Ashton, who regularly speaks to the community about the devastating impacts of family violence, said one of the biggest myths around family violence was that witnesses were powerless. "People have this misconception that it's none of their business - that what happens in the home stays in the home," Mrs Ashton said. "I cannot stress enough to people who have seen or heard anything, particularly if they know children are present, to call the police or another service and they may save a life." Anyone in immediate danger should contact ‘000' (Triple Zero). They can also make time to speak with local police for advice and support. Approaching the area from the other direction is a similar sign, near the bridge onto Jaycee Island, which indicates dogs are to be restrained on a lead. It's been like this for a long time - confusing isn't it? It's not as if the responsible department of the Benalla Rural City hasn't been aware of this contradiction for some time. When I contacted the Civic Centre some weeks ago I was told "oh yes, they already know about that". So obviously I am not the only citizen who cares about the lake surrounds. It's not as if there would be the need for an act of parliament to get these tiny signs right, it just needs a little care from those people our rates and taxes are paying. The number of dog owners who don't pick up after their little mutts, and some not so little mutts is surprising. Here again maybe, like most other caring country town and city councils throughout this fine country that have similar walking trails, we could provide a few strategically placed doggy bins around the lake, which just might entice a few more dog owners to be a little more respectful to other users of the walking trail. Four would be enough and that wouldn't cost anything like the $ ,000 needed for the relocation of the east end of the Showgrounds fence, would it? I just need to understand why that didn’t occur.’’ Dep Comm Lay said the officer’s actions suggested he ‘‘wasn’t very smart’’. ‘‘He will face court in due course and face the consequences of these actions. ‘‘Clearly that sort of behaviour is very difficult for me to condone. It undermines the road safety message and that’s downright dangerous.’’ A Victoria police media spokeswoman said an investigation had been launched into the incident. I understand that your concern is that management of police at Benalla have failed to act on information you provided some time ago. I also understand that you were advised that police were unable to access the footage that you referred to which had been posted on Youtube. I have myself tried to access this footage without success. The message I am given on screen is This video has been removed due to terms of use violation. It would appear that the Youtube administrators have removed it for an unknown reason. I have made attempts with Youtube to gain archival access to the footage but to date I have not had a reply. Also disappointed at Sgt Johnson and your reply in not able to gain access Youtube to view the video to the matter of a dangerous and law breaking issue, I’m sure Benalla Police would be able to identify the cars and, I am suspicious to why this video was removed after notifying Sgt Johnson. I hope you can understand my feelings of such uselessness by Benalla police and police lack off investigation with evidence which was given to police on a plate at the time. I feel the issue should be investigated properly, I’m sure police should have no troubled to access Youtube archives video regarding a law-breaking offence. It’s seems Sgt Johnson was unable to use police initiative in accessing vision from Youtube this video, but free for any member of the public to view this unlawful offence! The investigating Benalla police officer stated that she is still waiting to hear from Youtube. The Youtube video also showed a quick head shot of one of the youths at the burnouts being done by the two cars, on this country road intersection. But I can see Benalla police letting this go through; even pass the keeper, very slack of Benalla senior police. -------------------------------------- HOW DOSE YOUR NEWSPAPER RATE NEWS TIP/LETTER – TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND MEDIA WATCH ABC1-TV Mondays 9:35pm ADELAIDE NEWS PAPER THE ADVERTISER Advertiser by Name, Advertiser by Nature Front Page Leading News story!! 10 years younger and not a surgeon in sight —The Advertiser (Adelaide), 13th May, 2010 Read or Watch segment from Media Watch ABC1-TV http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s2907957.htm The spin cycle: how your newspaper fared http://www.crikey.com.au/2010/03/15/the-spin-cycle-how-your-newspaper-fared/ -------------------------------------- HIT THE MINING COMPANIES HIT THEM WHERE THEY READ FIGHT THE SCARE COMPAIGN Did you know that the mining industry is saturating newspapers with fear-mongering ads against the proposed tax on their super profits? New data shows there were nearly 1,600 families on the list in the Wodonga, Shepparton, Wangaratta, Seymour and Benalla areas in March. The list has increased by 45 families since December. The Opposition's housing spokeswoman, Wendy Lovell, refused to reveal the Coalition's policy, but she says the Government has not done enough. "We have a housing crisis at all levels of housing, we have a crisis in the home ownership sector of it, we have a crisis in private rental and right across the state there's virtually zero affordable private rental properties available for lower income families and that in turn puts downward pressure on the public housing waiting list," she said. The Victorian Government says the list has grown because of pressure from record private market rents and all-time low vacancy rates. Housing Minister Richard Wynne says 330 new homes are being built in the Hume region for low income people. He says the state-wide waiting list is lower than it was when the Labor Government was elected in 1999. -------------------------- NEWS TIP/LETTER – TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND AUSTRALIAN SUICIDES ON THE INCREASE SHEPPARTON WIN-TV NEWS 20 MAY 2010 Australian suicides continue on the increase, Australian suicide numbers have nearly double road death toll -------------------------- PREGNANT SOLDIERS Last week four Australian soldiers in the Middle East were sent back to Australian, because they are pregnant. -------------------------- RESULT FROM INTERLEAGUE GAMES GVFL Vs O&M O&KL Vs LODDON VALLEY AT ’BENALLA SPORTS’ SECTION www.photosbyroman.multiply.com Photo- Nick Fry representing All Blacks in the Interleague game -------------------------- NEWS TIP/LETTER – TO THE EDITOR BENALLA ENSIGN ANGELA TOWNSEND SPORTS – AUSTRALIAN RULES AKER-KAKA Jason Akermanis is telling homosexual Australian Rules players, to stay in the closet. Well, just give it a few years mate; make an effort to understand... Below copy of letter Shepparton News Paper 11 May 2010 BURQA DIALOGUE WILL HELP Frank Purcell, Shepparton 11 May 2010 The burqa isn’t a common sight in the streets around Shepparton. Even though Muslim Australians make up about 10 per cent of the population here, my experience has been limited to three sightings of the burqa in the 30 years I have lived here. The veil, on the other hand, is a common sight and it has been made part of the school uniform in several local schools. My memories of Catholic life in Melbourne as a kid is of women covering their hair in church, of nuns in schools and of nuns and nurses in hospitals wearing veils, of young single women dressing up regularly in white veils and blue cloaks and walking along the streets for a monthly Mass of the Children of Mary. Our Protestant neighbours got used to it and that was that. They didn’t necessarily like it, but they respected our right to be different. Something of the same tolerance seems to be accorded the Muslim veil in Shepparton. If that is something Muslim women want to do, so be it. At least, that seems to be the reaction in this town. But discuss the burqa and there is a different reaction. Even non-Muslim Australians who are comfortable with the veil find the burqa disturbing. I find my own reaction interesting. The one time I had a conversation with an Australian-educated young mother wearing the burqa, I found myself annoyed. It was as if one of the normal rules of politeness were being ignored, not by a religious requirement but by a social custom from about two or three Muslim countries which restrict the involvement of women in the wider community. Rightly or wrongly I found myself thinking that the wearer was signaling that she did not want to be part of the Australian community. I think it was that which made me annoyed. I was pleased to read the comments from the president of the Muslim Women’s National Network of Australia who endorsed the call for the burqa to be banned in public. She gives community security and safety priority over a woman’s claim to wear a burqa if that opens the way to crime. I don’t think there is sufficient risk of that to justify a ban on the burqa, but a dialogue with Muslim leaders to hear the concerns felt, rightly or wrongly, by non-Muslims would go a long way towards mutual agreement on the real reasons for the impact of the burqa. Banning it will not solve the problem. But if there is widespread agreement among both Muslim and non-Muslim Australians that discouraging the wearing of the burqa is important for community relations, then the practice will gradually die out. MAYBE NOT A SO RATIONAL APPROCHE AS ABOVE! Gerry Canopolous and Heike:- I feel the Christian religion the Catholics should follow Australian customs too, if not get back to where they came from. This organization the Catholic Church must stop sexually abusing children, they have been doing this for thousands of years, since the start of their Catholic religion and, getting away with child sex abuse, and they still are getting away with it! Is this part of their religious custom, here in Australia too? Their Pope should be cross-examined, covering up sexual child abuse, as Heike says ‘living in Australia try to adopt our customs’. Does that go for the Catholic Church too Heike? Sounds like Heike and Gerry think it’s not ok wearing a burqa as a Muslim choice or belief but its ok for the Catholic Church to sexually abuse children! Doesn’t this foreign Christian custom with their so called holy men of the catholic religion; does this not trouble you Gerry and Heike, this Christian religion and its sex abuse on children, it is not an isolated issue, its world wide by this Christian organisation. Closer to home!
An incident, same time back now, but nevertheless (that we now of!) of a sexual advance on a female student in Benalla, lately as I remember Wangarratta and another town in our region with child porn by Christian priests men of god!!! Yes Garry and Heike, only to pick-on defenceless news Australians because of their dress. But shit-scare to speak-up for the young and helpless children that have been and are still being physically abused and sexually abused by members of the Catholic Church. Last week thousands of GetUp members called their Labor MPs and Senators to demand they stand up for climate action at Monday's meeting of Labor representatives. The headlines on Tuesday show that it worked.
But 'worried' isn't enough to change Labor policy yet. And, sadly, it wasn't enough to prevent Tuesday night's budget austerity on climate action, with its recycled money for renewable energy.
But can you imagine the reaction of politicians when, just days after their electorate office is flooded with calls, their Parliament house office is too? That will take them from 'worried' to downright panicked.

SPORTS BENALLA - AUSTRALIAN RULES Benalla Saints Echuca 15 May 2010 Benalla 8.5-53 def. by Echuca 24.25-169 -------------------------------------- SPORTS Coach Pete says he ‘saw the light’ SHEPPNEWS 1 MAY 10 - Pictures: Bethanie Sessions Pete Pettigrew has a long and distinguished history in the game of Aussie Rules, but said eight years ago he ‘‘saw the light’’. Code swapper: Pete Pettigrew was once a dedicated AFL man and a star of the MFL, but now soccer is his passion. The former Aussie Rules coach, 200-game player, 1976 Murray Football League O’Dwyer medallist and Nathalia premiership player said soccer was his passion now, while his old sport of Aussie Rules rarely gets his attention. He was introduced to the game by his daughters who started playing for Wanganui in Shepparton Junior Soccer Association. Before long he was coaching them in the under-15 competition. ‘‘First thing I did when I was coach was go down to the library and get a book out on soccer — that didn’t help much,’’ Pettigrew said. ‘‘I used the same theories in Aussie Rules for soccer.’’ Pettigrew’s knowledge of the game may have been ‘‘low to zero’’, but over the years with the help of those around him he said he had found more satisfaction in his new sport than his old. He said the Shepparton South under-14 girls’ premiership won two years ago in the inaugural Goulburn North East Football Association had been his most precious sporting achievement to date. ‘‘I thought that (the MFL grand final) was my best moment in sport, but two years ago we had the first girls’ comp in the North East and we managed to go through and win that. I enjoyed that more than the actual Murray League grand final,’’ Pettigrew said. He is now coach of the Shepp South under15 girls’ team even though his own daughters have outgrown the age. He said coaching teenage girls was tougher than coaching grown men with tattoos, but the sport was now in his blood. ‘‘It’s so unpredictable; you can dominate a game all day and still not win. It’s so hard to get a goal; in the AFL it’s a bit too easy probably . . . I think soccer’s a more skilful game.’’ ‘‘When I was playing football (Aussie Rules) I had heard of soccer, but I didn’t take much notice to be honest, but now I think I would rather go watch the World Cup in South Africa than go to a (AFL) grand final.’’
